ONEarth Basics: Why choose Bamboo over plastic? ?Plastic takes over 1000 years to decompose - ergo, every plastic product ever thrown away is still there on the planet somewhere, choking landfills or oceans. And there are about 8 billion people out there. Think about this for a few seconds. Bamboo, on the other hand, takes anywhere from a few months to about 5 years to decompose, depending on ambient conditions. It can grow on degraded lands, and is among the fastest growing plants in the world (some species growing as fast as 36 in within 24 hours). Also, Bamboo is a grass. Not a tree.
